I attended Richland 1 schools and graduated from Lower Richland High School in Hopkins, SC.
I graduated from Duke University with a degree in Comparative Area Studies, an interdisciplinary global studies major, and I concentrated in Latin American Studies.
For 5 years after Duke, I managed private, for-profit learning centers in Washington, DC and Baltimore for Kaplan Educational Centers. I then moved to Nigeria, West Africa to work for AcademicAssociates PeaceWorks, a large national NGO teaching conflict resolution and peace.
I helped with fundraising, managed various local projects in Abuja, and later I moved to Port Harcourt in Rivers State to oversee the opening of several field offices throughout the Niger Delta. This experience encouraged me to appreciate the educational opportunities I was provided growing up in SC. After about a year, I returned to the US to teach public school.
I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education with a Masters in Education in 2006, and I taught at Julia de Burgos Bilingual School in North Philadelphia's Latino community for 7 years. I returned home to Columbia, SC and began teaching at Kelly Mill in 2012.
I grew up with a love for the beach, macaroni and cheese, good music, and time with my family. I try to maintain an active lifestyle, so if you see me slipping, feel free to keep me in check.
I am looking forward to a great year at Kelly Mill!
Sincerely,
R. Lopez
